– Fernando de Szyszlo Valdelomar; Lima, 1925 – 2017) Peruvian painter and art critic. After a stay in Paris, he became the most prominent representative of abstraction in his country, developing a personal abstract indigenism. He also taught at the universities of Cornell, Yale and Texas (United States).
-Fernando de Szsyzlo had a brilliant career both nationally and internationally. Proof of this were the innumerable recognitions that he acquired for his talent. For example, in 1981 he was decorated by the French Republic with the Order of Arts and Letters in the degree of Knight. Likewise, in 1987 the Government of Chile awarded him the Bernardo O’Higgins decoration (distinction granted to foreign citizens for their participation and contribution in the arts, sciences, education, sports, industry and commerce or humanitarian and social cooperation) in the rank of Grand Officer and the most emotional and well-deserved was in 2001, where he received the highest Peruvian decoration in the Order of the Sun of Peru in the rank of Grand Cross. On the other hand, in 2014 he was named Ambassador of the Peru Brand for his successful career, which has contributed to promoting the country in the world. Another remarkable fact was that the prestigious magazine The Economist called him in an article, published in 2015, as the last modernist. An artist who left a cultural legacy that can be appreciated in the most important museums in the world, such as the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid, Spain; the Museum of the Americas in Washington, United States; The Guggenheim Museum in New York; the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico; the Museum of Fine Arts in Caracas, Venezuela; Lima Art Museum; the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; The National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, South Korea; among others. A Peruvian who had innumerable artistic samples. In 1974 alone he had approximately 1,500 works, and today he has left us a legacy of more than three thousand paintings, many of them based on acrylic and oil paint. In addition, his long career led him to go through the teaching branch, becoming a professor at the PUCP School of Art and also at Cornell and Yale universities. Among the most representative samples of it are: Inkarri, Orrantia, Ritual Chamber, Passage Room, Black Sun, Visitor, Waman wasi, Interiors, among others. There is no doubt that the departure of this outstanding Peruvian sculptor, painter and critic moistens the hearts of millions of people around the world due to his impeccable artistic career and undeniable talent and love for his ancestral roots. In addition to being currently the most outstanding representative of abstraction in Latin America.
